Students Demonstrate Medical Device Prototype

ST. PAUL, Minn., May 13, 2026 – University of Northwestern’s School of Science and Engineering collaborated across disciplines in a year-long senior project culminating in a prototype demonstration for a biomedical device company. This interdisciplinary partnership allows for company expansion into new markets.

The Northwestern Center for Innovation and Research (NCIR) team was composed of Computer Science and Engineering students with oversight from a faculty advisor. The value brought by both programs shows the invaluable connection brought by the NCIR as a tool to bridge industry across departments.

Dr. Siu-Yue Tam, Associate Professor of Engineering and Director of the Northwestern Center for Innovation and Research, commented, “This interdisciplinary approach significantly strengthens the value proposition for [the company] while providing a rich, hands-on experience for the students.”

The company plans to continue partnering with Northwestern and the NCIR on a long-term basis.
