Northwestern is preparing God-honoring leaders to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding biomedical field.
Meeting the Growing Demand
To meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in biomedical technology, we expanded our engineering programs in 2025 to include the addition of the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) degree.
Anticipating strong student and industry demand, we introduced a concentration in chemical engineering in 2025, making Northwestern the only private university in Minnesota to offer this option.
In fall of 2026, engineering students will be able to earn a 20-credit Biomedical Technology Minor further equipping them with additional skills to better support Minnesota’s growing biomedical device industry.
Northwestern Center for Innovation and Research
Since its launch in the fall of 2024, the Northwestern Center for Innovation and Research (NCIR), led by Dr. Siu-Yue Tam, have solidified three industry partnerships. One of our 2025-26 senior project teams, composed of Engineering and Computer Science students, presented its prototype to a partner biomedical device company through NCIR. This company sees the students’ impressively thoughtful design as a game-changer that will allow them to expand into multiple new markets, and they look forward to a long-term partnership with Northwestern.
As a practical expression of Amplify the Gospel, NCIR is a bridge where students learn with purpose––developing solutions to serve real world needs while growing as ambassadors in Christ.
